Who we are
The Sports Network Council is a consortium of community, voluntary, youth, and sports organisations, schools and statutory bodies that acts as an umbrella organisation to promote the greater participation of socially excluded groups in sports and health activities in Tower Hamlets.
It was established in 1998 out of extensive consultation with young people living in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets who were concerned that young people from ethnic minorities were not given the support and opportunities to participate in sport and had limited access to recreational facilities. Groups were concerned that young peoples sporting talent was not being nurtured, and skills were left undeveloped, resulting in a lack of ethnic minority sporting figures and key role models. Tower Hamlets also suffers from an increasing problem of gang conflict, youth violence, drugs, crime, vandalism and harassment. Sport was seen as a way of targeting hard to reach groups by engaging them in an activity which positively interests them, so as to improve confidence and self esteem as well as to develop core skills to improve their educational opportunities and employability.
Tower Hamlets has a high concentration of Council & Housing Association accommodation with a significant overcrowding problem. There are poor levels of health within Council tenants and the provision of exercise and fitness at an estate based level is essential if some improvement is to be made to the quality of life of this at risk group.
The Sports Network Council felt that in order to tackle these problems two interlinked programmes were needed.
a. To encourage existing young sporting talent to develop their skills and to provide training opportunities for young people to gain qualifications in sports leadership and broker links into employment in the sports/health and leisure industry.
b. To train local young people as community sports leaders to work alongside local community groups to develop sports and exercise programmes to promote the health and well being of socially excluded residents.
Young people are the future of Tower Hamlets and sports activities attract a vast number of young people. It is an alternative way of encouraging young people to participate in sports and recreational activities of their interest. Our sports leaders have devised programmes from a range of sporting activities, to ensure that it is suitable for all participants to take part. SNC do not just view sports as an enjoyable leisure activity, but also as a way of keeping participants fit and help improve their personal development.
Aims & Objectives
Abdul Mukit (MBE), a prominent figure in the community, received MBE on Millennium year for services to the young people in Tower Hamlets. He is also chair of Boundary Community School and the founder/director of Spitalfield Housing Association.
Suroth Miah, Chairman of Bangladesh Football Association (UK) and also works for the Government in Civil Service. Suroth is also a prominent figure in the local Community and a founder of Sports Network Council.

SNC Youth League
SNC Youth League is the main project of Sports Network Council and it has been in operation since 1998. Initially the league started with one division for Under 16’s age group, with 10 teams from local and outside Tower Hamlets taking part. This has now expanded to three age groups Under 16’s, Under 14’s and Under 12’s with 10 teams in age groups. The SNC Youth League is the only Youth League in London Borough of Tower Hamlets and operates during winter and summer seasons. The SNC Youth League has been hugely successful within and outside of Tower Hamlets and has allowed local teams from housing estate to participate in Youth Leagues at U16, U14 and U12 throughout the year. The Leagues help to support and nurture the talents of the local young people. This year, there are 22 Clubs registered to play in the summer and winter League in the upcoming season.
Community Sports Coach Programme
SNC has been delivering, Community Sports Coach Programme project in partnership with Pro-Active East London for the last three years and are continuing to do so. The project provides qualified football coaches to set structured/charted standard coaching sessions to help nurture young sporting talents within the local community. The sessions are estate based and are delivered in various locations within London borough of Tower Hamlets, locations such as Stepney Green park, Weavers Field, Mile End park, and Wapping.
Jack Petchey Foundation
SNC is enrolled on the Jack Petchey Achievement Award scheme. This allows young people to receive an achievement award in recognition for their hard work. The award is given to not just the best player or highest goal scorer but to young people who have shown courage, commitment, determination & progress during a period of time. As part of the Award young people decide on how they would like to spend their award. For example watching live premier league football; team building nights and more.
Volunteering Programme
SNC has many opportunities for young people to be involved in volunteering. Young people are welcomed to volunteer in administration/office work, football coaching, youth working and lots more. SNC provides volunteering opportunities to young people so that they can build confidence, develop and learn new skills as well as use these skills later in adult life.
Taster of Football Coaching
Taster of Football Coaching Project was a 10 weeks project for young people to experience and also participate in well structured football coaching session from qualified coaches. The coaching session was delivered by a qualified football coach with FA Coaching Level two/three badge. The project attracted 30+ young people in each session every week and all participants were from different ethnic minority groups. The project was funded by Tower Hamlets Council from Youth Opportunity Fund.
Training
Training courses are developed and run by SNC in partnership with other agencies i.e. British Sports Trust. Some courses have commenced but there are always new courses starting at all times throughout the year.
